Jim Aussem Is Ken Black Leadership Award Recipient

Aussem, JD, AEP, is the 2019 recipient of the prestigious Kenneth Black Jr. Leadership Award presented by the Society of Financial Service Professionals (FSP). The award, named in recognition of the 1959-2001 editor of the Journal of Financial Service Professionals, is presented annually to an individual who embodies FSP’s core values of relationships, education, and ethics and demonstrates exemplary leadership qualities. Aussem, who served as FSP’s 90th president in 2017-18, is an attorney and shareholder with the Cleveland-based law firm of Cavitch Familo & Durkin, Co., LPA, where his practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, succession planning, and estates and trusts. He has been selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America every year since 2009. In announcing the award at ceremonies in Coronado, California, FSP president, Robert B. Wellendorf, referred to Aussem’s strength as a relationship-builder and “rock star” educator who has made countless continuing education presentations to groups across the financial services spectrum, including estate planning councils, CPA societies, insurance companies, and FSP chapters. In further supporting Aussem’s selection for this award, Wellendorf stated, “Jim Aussem is a true professional whose ethical values are a part of his everyday approach to life and who generously shares his talents and expertise,” This is easily demonstrated by his service as a member of the planned giving committees of the Cleveland Museum of Art, University Hospitals, and Baldwin-Wallace College, his alma mater. He has also been instrumental in the Cleveland-Akron Chapter annual golf outing raising significant funds for the benefit of the FSP Foundation and other charitable causes. In congratulating Aussem on this honor, Society of FSP CEO David M. Maola, remarked, “Jim’s clear thinking and inspirational leadership set the course for FSP’s long-term success.
