What Is Intergenerational Split Dollar and How Does It Work?

 

Program Overview

Intergenerational split dollar is a means for a family member with significant assets to pay for life insurance on the life of a family member with lesser wealth.  Typically Generation 1 (grandparents) pays for life insurance insuring Generation 2 (children) for the benefit of Generation 3 (grandchildren). The session will cover all the information you need to determine the suitability of an intergenerational split dollar plan for your clients, in light of relevant regulations and recent Tax Court activity.

You will learn:

  • Mechanics of intergenerational split dollar
  • Different plan design options
  • Tax implications of the plan
  • Target market for the plan

 

Featured Speaker:

Mark T. Brumbaugh, JD joined the Guardian in 2008 and is a Senior Consultant in the Business Resource Center for Advanced Markets. He works closely with Guardian agents in their efforts to assist closely-held business owners and wealthy clients plan for their future.  He has over twenty-five years of experience helping insurance professionals and other advisors to implement and understand the tax consequences associated with all manner of advanced planning techniques such as business continuation plans, executive benefits programs, charitable giving and life insurance trusts. Prior to joining Guardian, Mark held comparable positions at Nationwide, Provident Mutual, and Manulife Financial.  He obtained his law degree from Temple University and a B.S. in economics from Penn State University.
